John Leonard Riddell's 1845 Guide to the Mint at New OrleansNew Orleans: Printed at the Office of the Picayune, 1845. 12.5 by 7.5 cm. Later blue paper covers, sewn. 15, (1) pages; woodcut illustration of the reverse of a New Orleans $10 gold piece on title. Extremely rare, with this being the only recorded copy in private hands of which we are aware. An equally rare second edition dated 1847 was discovered 10 years ago. Published the same year as Riddell's famous Monograph of the Silver Dollar, Good and Bad, a version of Part I of this work was also printed in the New Orleans Annual and Commercial Register of 1846. Eric P. Newman reproduced Riddell's guide in the April 1968 issue of The Numismatist, introducing it to a much wider readership. Some old corner folds and other minor signs of wear. Near fine.
