First Depiction of American MedalsPhiladelphia: Carey and Hart, 1848. 8vo, rebound in modern red cloth with original red cloth upper cover, richly decorated in gilt within triple gilt fillets in a floral motif with shield at head and text in center, laid on; all page edges gilt. viii, (9)-315, (1) pages; 14 attractive plates depicting both sides of 41 medals, finely engraved by W.L. Ormsby utilizing a medal-ruling machine process. Foxing throughout, as usual. First plate stained. Very good. The first book-length work relating to American medals, comprised of forty-one biographies of "the illustrious commanders of our two wars" who had been presented with medals struck in their honor. Very scarce. The plates in this title are nearly always foxed. Wyatt is remembered today for striking copies of early American coins, which he sold as originals. A number of these Wyatt copies and one fantasy are included in the Newman X coin sale. Estimate $500. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
