(1810-1813) English Occupation Guadeloupe, Crowned G Countermark on a Fourth-Cut 8 Reales, VF. See KM# 30. 7.3 grams. Struck under British Administration, some 8 reales pieces were pierced with a square hole and stamped with a Crowned G. Other 8 reales coins were fourth-cut (such as this example) and struck three times with the same Crowned G countermark. The cut pieces passed for two livres five sous. This piece was cut from a chopmarked 8 reales, with Chinese chops pre-dating the British countermarks and still visible on the host segment. A number of contemporary counterfeits of the countermark exist, and Heritage's World Coin experts believe this coin falls into that category. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
