Circa 1801 Cut Half-Segment from a Carolus IIII 8 Reales. Three S Countermarks, Plus TIRTILA Bar Punch, Fine. 12.4 grams, circulated as 4 Bits. Thought to be an issue of the "Three Saints" leeward islands, or possibly St. Kitts - Tortola (here spelled as TIRTILA). The main countermark shows raised letters within a depressed area, from a deeply struck bar punch. Three "S" counterstamps are punched as individual letters. This is a scarce and popular West Indies countermark issued during the British colonial period. NGC examined this piece and called it a "contemporary imitation." Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
