19th Century U.S. Gold Standard Balance. Fine. A large brass and forged steel U.S. gold standard balance mounted on a marble base. Used in banks to check the weight of circulated U.S. gold coins, and reduce their acceptance value if worn. Manufactured by E. Howard & Co. of Boston, Massachusetts. Edward Howard was an inventor and manufacturer of watches, fire engines, and balances. He operated as E. Howard & Co. from 1858 to 1861. Approximately 24 x 9 x 20.5 inches. Ex: Eric P.
