Circa 1700 English Coin Scale with Weights in a Round-Cornered Wooden Case; plus a Second Scale, Possibly Foreign, in an Unlabeled Box. Fine to Very Fine. This circa 1700 English coin scale is housed in a round-cornered, decorated wooden case with diamond-shaped embossing. The case has its original clasp and measures 6.5 x 2.4 x 1.0 inches. It houses an iron and brass scale plus three weights (two half guinea weights, W-976 and W-1229, and one guinea weight, W-1197). The box is well-preserved while the iron scale has moderate rust. The brass pans, each hallmarked with an elaborate R in a toothed rectangle, show minor encrustations. The second iron and brass scale is housed in a grained rectangular wooden box measuring 6.1 x 2.8 x 1.1 inches. There are no markings on the case or the brass pans. Each of the pans retains its red suspension strings, and a leather plumb remains on the iron balance mechanism. The scale shows no rust and only minor areas of discoloration. Burgundy velvet lines the bottom of the case, which has a square compartment for weights, but no weights are present. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
