H. Kohlbusch Portable Assay Scale; plus a Second Scale in an Unlabeled Wooden Box. H. Kohlbusch emigrated from Saxony, Germany in 1851. He established the Herman Kohlbusch Balance Company in 1859, which continued through three Kohlbusch generations in one form or another until the company was sold in 1978. The pocket assay scale was one of the most popular and widely distributed Kohlbusch products from the mid-to-late 1880s until at least the mid-1940s. This well-preserved example is complete with a full set of weights in its self-contained walnut case with burgundy felt on the bottom. No.5A ASSAY is stamped both left and right of the front latch. 6.0 x 2.6 x 1.3 inches. The second scale has a simple rectangular wood box with a full set of U.S. apothecary weights. The brass scale parts are in good condition with deep-blue braided threads for the pans. 6.8 x 3.2 x 1.5 inches. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
