Selection of Money Shovels. Five money shovels include a 19th century example from China, a Standard Union Works wooden money shovel with metal dividers, a 19th century Japanese coin shovel for square "ishii" silver coins with Japanese characters on the back, an Asian coin shovel with characters on the side, and a modern coin shovel of uncertain origin. These money shovels were designed to facilitate fast counting of large quantities of coinage. One coin fit in each slot, counting either 50 or 80 coins at a time. Ex: Eric P.
