Title Lot 15850
Description Eckfeldt, Jacob R., and William E. Du Bois. A Manual of Gold and Silver Coins of All Nations... Philadelphia: Published at the Assay Office of the Mint, 1842. Small 4to, contemporary brown half morocco, gilt; spine with four raised bands richly decorated in gilt. (4), iv, (5)-220 pages; finely engraved frontispiece title engraving of the Mint building; 16 attractively engraved plates of coins, all on coated paper with original tissue guards. Title page with upper fore-edge corner missing and replaced with photocopy. Some browning and foxing. Very good. The first edition of this landmark work in American numismatics. For nearly two decades it was the only practical guide available to American coin collectors. It was also the first work to illustrate the 1804 dollar and was one of the earliest works to combine photography, electrotyping and the medal ruling machine for illustrative purposes. The binding strongly suggests that this may have been a presentation copy, from which someone unfortunately tore out an inscription on the title page. Estimate $250. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15850 (realized $336). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11229
