Proskey, David. Letter to David Proskey from the Acting Secretary of the Treasury, Confiscating a $10 Treasury Note. The letter concerns a $10 Treasury note issued under Congressional Act of February 24, 1815, that Proskey, for reasons unknown, submitted to the Treasury Department inquiring as to its validity. The Acting Secretary writes that "I have to inform you that this note not having been countersigned was illegally procured from the Department and is of no value whatsoever. For this reason the note is retained." Written on Treasury Department letterhead and dated Sept. 27, 1882. Proskey has noted in pencil that he responded to the letter on Oct. 4, and one wishes one could see it. Fine. Estimate $100. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
