Description Maryland April 10, 1774 $1/9 Fr. MD-60. PCGS Choice New 63PPQ. This is an impressive condition rarity, and important as the lowest denomination from the series. It is possibly the finest known. Like the 1767 and 1770 series, strictly Uncirculated notes are virtually impossible to obtain. This lowest denomination fractional is the first of a vertical pairing from the Newman Collection, both with serial number 11519. Secret marks were used on the face plates; in this case, a colon after "Annapolis" served as a deliberate error to prevent note raising or counterfeiting. This is well margined on all sides, with broad sheet selvage at the right, and nearly a full left indent design. The face-to-back registration is perfect for the type. This is a lovely note and worth a significant premium above the higher dollar-denominated notes from the issue. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $1086.88. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18068. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
