Maryland June 8, 1780 $8 Fr. MD-114. PCGS Choice About New 55. This is a rare series of Frederick Green printed notes with few observed from any of the twelve different denominations above Very Fine condition. The "Black Money" notes are so rare that the Boyd Collection had only a few denominations, and it was nowhere close to having the full dozen necessary for completeness. This denomination was not in Boyd, and exceeds the finest Boyd collection note sold in Ford Part XV by at least a half to full grade. That was an Extremely Fine Half Dollar, Lot 8163, and sold for $6,325. The paper here is crisp and only some wisps of foxing or tone in the paper prevent this from being a "PPQ" example. A gorgeous example and possibly the finest of this rare series. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
Realized $7,050.00. Newman VI (Heritage Auctions, 4/2015), lot 19476. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions. |
