Province of the Massachusetts Bay October 14, 1713 Redated 1736 12 Pence Fr. MA-56q. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. A very rare Massachusetts "Tall" Bill printed on laid paper from a successively redated copper plate that was first engraved in 1713 and was used for the final series in 1740. This example is near the end of the re-issues and later dates are along the inside bottom edge of the trapezoid containing the obligation of the note. The earlier successive redates run vertically at the right. At the top is fancy scrollwork and at lower left, the Royal Crowned emblem with motto of The Garter. The top of the back is printed with fine line flourishes. Showing four signatures, three of which are accomplished in a strong hand. An attractive Bill of Credit with some normal flaws seen on these large notes. The plate wear at this later date was evident, and not much was done to strengthen the Royal Arms. The later dates running across are harder to read. Although by PCGS cited "Splits and Repairs; Small Edge Tears; Minor Stains," this note is better looking than those notations would indicate. The Boyd Collection example was a 1740 redated note that had a corner missing; it was sold at Ford Part III May 2005 for $6,037. This is pleasing overall and, of course, rarely offered for sale.
