| Description | Pennsylvania April 20, 1781 40 Shillings Fr. PA-253. PCGS New 62PPQ. The large format shilling notes from this series are much rarer than the small pence notes. This higher-denomination note is believed to be Rarity 7 (4-12 known). It is attractive and well designed, with the Commonwealth arms inside a quartet of well-made border cuts. Velvety black printing enhances the fresh and original paper. This example perfectly exhibits the style of the later Pennsylvania notes printed by John Dunlap. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society From Newman VIII (Heritage Auctions, 11/2017), lot 28127, realized $1920. Image and description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, https://ha.com. |
