Pennsylvania April 20, 1781 5 Pounds & 10 Shillings Back Proofs Pair Fr. PA-256/249. PCGS Very Fine 35 Apparent. This is an intriguing and likely unique uncut pair of "Trial Specimen" backs as described in the Newman text for the series. Printed on laid paper, they are well struck and exhibit the strong details seen on a paper proof impression. The complete 5 pounds is seen, plus part of an adjacent note above, and a wide sheet edge at left. The 10 shillings is not complete, as it is shaved evenly away at the right. The blank verso has period official notations with "Superintending the/[unknown word(s)] to Strike" and signed at the bottom by "William Harris" in a bold flourish. In a different pen at the top center is a notation "Wm. Harris one of the committee." Noted with "Small Edge Splits and Tears; Minor Stains" by PCGS, but with deep embossing seen to the back. fascinating and unique printer's piece from the Dunlap studio. Ex: Eric P.
