North Carolina August 8, 1778 $40 Freedom of Speech... Fr. NC-180. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. This is an iconic, patriotic motto type from the series. The full motto "Freedom of Speech, and the Liberty of the Press" is in the lower left cartouche. Only 3,125 were authorized and, based upon observation, the type seems much rarer than others in this series. This example is essentially full, but noted are "Splits and Tears; Tape Repairs." The repairs consist of old hinges along the edges for reinforcement. An important and historic motto type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society
