Description North Carolina May 10, 1780 $600 Fr. NC-199. PCGS Extremely Fine 45 Apparent. The highest denomination from the series and the only motto type. "Crescit sub pondere / virtus" (Virtue grows under pressure). Printed on thick paper by James Davis with his imprint on the back. There are ornamental borders around the perimeter, and inner borders on three sides form cartouches for NORTH CAROLINA CURRENCY at the top, Death to counterfeit at the left, and the denomination at the right. On this denomination, the value on the back is expressed in Arabic rather than the Roman numerals. Though with some faults cited by PCGS, "Repaired Edge Tears; Minor Stains," wide margined all around and a type worthy of a premium compared to the lesser denominations from the issue. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. From Newman X (Heritage Auctions, November 2018), lot 20398, realized $528.
