State of New York June 15, 1780 $2 Fr. NY-207. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. The State of New York Guaranteed by the United States notes are among the rarest in that series, with only 1,413 notes of each denomination authorized. They are rarely encountered, and only the Boyd collection had a significant denomination grouping from the eight emitted. Standard Guaranteed note designs with obligations are on the face, within border cuts, and the back has the color emblem and imprint. This note was fully signed on the face by Evert Bancker and Henry Rutgers, and properly countersigned on back by Abraham Yates, Jr. The Henry Rutgers signature is of historical interest. Rutgers signed this note at age 35, having returned to New York City for public service at the behest of patron George Clinton. As compensation for signing notes, he was paid two shillings per 100 notes signed (excerpted from "An Act for the Payment of certain contingent Expences [sic] of this State," April 14, 1782). The paper body is mostly solid, and the back shows attractive red color. Noted is a "Repaired Edge Split at Top Center" that is more noticed from the back. The $7 New York Guaranteed note in the April 2015 Newman VI sale realized $3,760 in PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. This very appealing representative faces up well and is a rare offering. Ex: Eric P.
