Colony of New York May 31, 1709 5 Shillings (a) Fr. NY-1. PCGS Extremely Fine 45 Apparent. The 1709 Colony of New York "Tall" notes are rare and, because they normally come in choice condition, they are very appealing. These May 31, 1709 notes were authorized for military expenditures, specifically for Canadian expeditionary forces to build three forts and transport troops up the Hudson River. Uniface and printed in black by William Bradford, without imprint, on horizontal four-subject sheets. The notes are typeset and have a top indented design block. There are three very bold, vanity style signatures in the character of the period. The Johannes DePeyster signature in particular flows artistically under the obligation. There are two plate positions with different text styles. This is "a" with "Shil-lings" split on two lines, "C" in Colony not skewed upwards, "&" on fourth line, and the "Governor" spelling. A very bold example with deep, natural embossing; well margined, and quite full with a natural deckled edge at the right. This has a PPQ appearance, but the noted "Minor Ink Erosion in Serial Number," categorizes it as Apparent. That petty ink "flaw" is virtually undetectable.
