US War Bond, $50, issued September 15, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan to Miss Wanda Vale, never cashed. Schwan-Boling 227b. Joseph Boling collection.

The most widely held United States security of all time, these war bonds were first issued as "defense bonds" prior to the Pearl Harbor attack (December 7, 1941) in order to assist the Allied war effort. Bonds paid 2.9% annually over a ten-year period. Following the entry of the United States into World War II, these became "war bonds" and were extremely popular among the public. In 1944, 27 million participants purchased over $12 billion in bonds.
