Purchased from Philip Mayes / Craigavon, Co. Armagh, N. Ireland. (Nv. 13 ,2024) ($13). UVF is poorly struck on a nearly uncirculated full red penny. These large Irish pennies were last minted in 1968 and circulated very little, which might explain the unusual amount of mint luster still present. The seller, who is a major coin dealer, has seen many examples in lots of coins that he's bought. He believes this one might be a trial strike that didn't circulate because of the poor application of UVF. I don't disagree with his assessment but I remain unsure as to it's backstory. |
