The exact interpretation of this stamp is uncertain, but probably alludes to an insurrection, war, political act, or something similar. The coin is heavily worn from circulation and the counterstamp appears to have been applied many years ago. One can only guess as to the event the maker wanted to see end peacefully. The seller regularly buys large lots of British coppers, mostly pennies and half pennies, from a coin d in the ealer in Coleford, Gloucestershire in the UK. He often comes across counterstamped coins from different eras. This example was discovered in one such lot. |
