1805 1C S-267, B-1, R.1, MS65 Brown PCGS. CAC. Our EAC Grade MS62. A sharp strike and good centering are evident on this lovely Gem, which displays reddish-tan surfaces and full cartwheel luster. Splashes of blue-steel toning appear on the high points, especially evident on the obverse. Variety: The Blunt 1 obverse combined with the highest leaf point below the left side of the final S in STATES identifies this variety. Breen Die State III with obverse clash marks and a reverse crack at the tops of AME. Population Data (3/15): For all varieties PCGS shows 18 Mint State 1805 large cents, including this Gem, the sole PCGS example in MS65 Brown and third finest behind an MS65 Red and Brown and an MS66 Brown. Heritage Commentary: Del Bland grades this piece MS61 and Bill Noyes calls it MS62. Both Bland and Noyes rank this example as tied for second finest in their lists. In his 2005 Census, Noyes included a 1999 Superior sale for this lot. However, that is incorrect, as Gene Gardner purchased this piece from the 1997 Superior sale. Naftzger, Jr. (2/23/1992); Eric Streiner; Jay Parrino; Superior (9/1997), lot 69.
