    After a two-year hiatus because of COVID-19, the Eric P. Newman Graduate Summer Seminar in Numismatics returned in 2022 for in-person instruction and research. This edition of the Planchet (season 3, number 3) contains brief conversations with Seminar director Peter van Alfen and visiting professor Jérôme Jambu, plus the cohort of five Seminar students from American University, the University of Chicago, the University of Southern California, the University of Texas at Austin, and Yale University.

    A Conversation with Richard Abdy of the British Museum

    Richard Abdy has worked in the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum since 1998 where he first processed treasure cases from England and Wales and now helps curate the BM's collection of Roman coins. He is the inaugural winner of the ANS's Collier Prize in Ancient Numismatics, which recognizes excellence in books on ancient coinage. Abdy's book, Roman Imperial Coinage (RIC) Vol.II: From AD 117 to AD 138 - Hadrian (Spink, 2020), was selected by the jury as the winner in 2021. In this episode, Abdy speaks about his numismatic path to the British Museum from his days as a Glasgow schoolboy, explains the 1996 Treasure Act, expands the idea of numismatics as a living history, and recounts how he was held captive at lunch and decided to undertake a 10-year journey into the Roman Imperial coinage of the emperor Hadrian. Since 2019, Shanna has been a Fellow of the American Numismatic Society and has also served as a board governor for the American Numismatic Association (ANA). She also held a board position with the International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN) and was a full member of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG). In this episode, we talk about growing up in a numismatics household, how she became a coin dealer after a career in advertising, advice to those starting a new business and to collectors new to the hobby, her work with auction representation, and her love of Chopin.

    Dr. T. Corey Brennan is a professor of Classics at Rutgers University. His newest book, published by Oxford University Press on October 3, 2022, is: The Fasces: A History of Ancient Rome's Most Dangerous Political Symbol. In this episode of the Planchet (season 3, episode 7), we talk about the new book, the iconography of the fasces, and its numismatic evidence; Brennan's trajectory as a scholar and professor of Classics and Roman history; how he juggled completing a Harvard PhD with recording and touring with The Lemonheads for their first two albums; the future of Classics and numismatic scholarship and publication; and his interest in and collection of papal medals.

    A Conversation with Chris McDowell

    Christopher R. McDowell is a lifelong numismatist and recognized expert in the area of colonial coinage and medals. He is the author of Abel Buell and the History of the Connecticut and Fugio Coinages along with several award-winning articles on American colonial coins and medals. An ANS Fellow, Chris is also the editor of the Journal of Early American Numismatics. A graduate of Marshall University and West Virginia University College of Law, Chris served as an officer in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps and was stationed in Korea, Germany, Bosnia, and Kansas. He currently practices law in Cincinnati, Ohio. His newest book is titled The Early Betts Medal Companion: Medals of America's Discovery and Colonization (1492-1737), published by the American Numismatic Society in 2022. The idea for the book grew from Chris' interest in Charles Wyllys Betts and American colonial history and medals. In this episode (season 3, number 9) we talk about Betts medals and their eponymous collector, how Chris got his start in the hobby, and his favorite numismatic colonial crime.

    Singer-songwriter and activist Billy Bragg joins the Planchet for a wide-ranging conversation about his interest in collecting Iron Age coinage from the United Kingdom (and coins generally), early regional and tribal history from where he grew up, the personal connection to that history through holding archaeological artifacts, and bonds shared between fathers and sons. We end the conversation by talking about "roadside America" and the search for interesting and historical out-of-the-way places while on tour.
