The MCA Advisory

The journal of the Medal Collectors of America (medalcollectors.org), the MCA Advisory features extensive original research, especially in the areas of Betts, Comitia Americana, Admiral Vernon, and Indian Peace medals. Series numbering is as follows.  We acknowledge Ron Thompson for providing a summary of the early issues (see also the September-October 2016 issue of the Advisory).

September 1998 – August 1999 (fiscal year 1): MCA officially formed at the August 1998 ANA convention.  There were two issues published in the first fiscal year, October 1998 (unnumbered) and July 1999 (no. 2). The first fiscal year represented Volume 1 although never designated as such.

September 1999 – August 2000 (fiscal year 2): Three issues were published in this fiscal year, no. 3 (March 2000), no. 4 (July 2000), and a third issue, The Medal Cabinet Issue, which was numbered as “Issue 1 Summer 2000,” although technically fifth in the series.  This fiscal year represented Volume 2, although not designated as such.

September 2000 – August 2001 (fiscal year 3): Two issues, no. 5 (October 2000) and no. 6 (June 2001).  These represent volume 3, although not designated as such.

September 2001 – August 2002 (fiscal year 4): Two issues, numbered as three, namely vol. 4, no. 1 (Winter 2002), and vol. 4, nos. 2 & 3 (Spring & Summer 2002).

September 2002 – August 2003 (fiscal year 5): One issue, unnumbered, dated July 2003.

September 2003 – December 2003 (fiscal year 6):  Three issues, starting with the vol. 6, no. 2 issue. (The July 2003 issue stated “Beginning our Sixth Year,” which was interpreted as vol. 6, no. 1, when in fact it was an unnumbered issue belonging to vol. 5.)  Thereupon followed vol. 6, no. 3, and vol. 6, no. 4. In January 2004, the volume number was changed to 7, moving the publication numbering from a fiscal to calendar year.

2004: volume 7, 12 issues, now monthly

2005: volume 8, 12 issues

2006: volume 9, 11 issues (May & June are combined into a single issue)

2007: volume 10, 12 issues

2008: volume 11, 11 issues (April/May combined as single issue)

2009: volume 12, 10 issues (April/May and October/November are combined issues)

2010: volume 13, 12 issues

2011: volume 14, 8 issues (April/May, June/July, July-September, November/December are combined)

2012: volume 15, 6 issues, now bimonthly.  The MCA currently (6/2016) continues to publish on a bimonthly schedule.
