Breve informe del establecimiento del escudo como unidad monetaria en Puerto Rico (1865) 2025

Breve informe del establecimiento del escudo como unidad monetaria en Puerto Rico (1865)

[Article by Ángel O. Navarro Zayas, extracted from Documenta & Instrumenta.]

[English translation of abstract.] The purpose of this research is to document and partially reconstruct a fragment of Puerto Rico's monetary history under the Spanish Empire. Primary sources from the National Historical Archive in Madrid and the Library of Congress in the United States have been used to gain a deeper understanding of this process. The author has employed a positivist historiographical approach to reconstruct the monetary legislation applied to Puerto Rico. In 1865, the Spanish authorities established the escudo as Puerto Rico’s new monetary unit. Numismatic historiography in Puerto Rico has not paid sufficient attention to this aspect of the island’s monetary legislative history. Very little has been documented on this topic. Nevertheless, the author believes that further research is needed to continue reconstructing Puerto Rico’s numismatic history.
