    FAKE T WENT Y CE By Jack White In the last issue of the Barber Journal 1 wrote of a brass counterfeit 1902 dime At the same show 1 found that fake I doubled my output with a pair of 1901 dimes that I believe are nickel silver The pair came from the same dealers stock Both coins fooled him He had each graded and priced as genuine Barber dimes Each of these coins looked unusual to me in his case and upon an in hand inspection I recognized both of them as fak

    Is the 1 893 2 really an overdate What is your opinion Why are there no Barber Dime doubled dies Why did Barber change the quarter hub in 1892 These are but some of the questions for which I am seeking answers In researching for this book on the Barber series I hope to come across many new die varieties to share with others I plan to publish some of the latest finds or submissions in the Barber Journal I am also looking to study die varieties which are questionable For example I received a copy of the Fall 1996 issue of Page 13

    the Barber Journal which had an 1 898 S Quarter on the cover This coin was listed as a doubled die After studying the photographs on the cover and in the book I came to the conclusion that this variety was not a doubled die but just strike dou bling The secondary images were larger than the primary on the letters and arrow tips there were no serifs on the secondary images and the metal flow would almost join

    es at virtually the same level as the Sheldon s or Bolander s acclaimed for Large Cent or Bust Dollar varieties We will miss the collector spirit of Joe and value his contributions to nu mismatics and to the Barber Society Phil Carrigan I just recently learned that Joe Haney had passed away last November The hobby has lost one of its most dedicated sons I always enjoyed Joe s articles in the Barber Journal and other places as I knew Joe would be sharing an idea or argu ment which was backed with evidence information and sometimes humor Joe loved a good argument but at the same time he was very open minded Several times I had the privilege of going to Joe s house to shoot his coins We spent hours talking he had some cool coin stories It was the kind of discussions which make coin collec

    BCCS PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Barber coins are doing well in collector and dealer circles based on my 2008 ANA Baltimore experience My stating doing well encompasses the market and prices but also people who are committed collectors of VG to VF coins putting date sets together and planning to write an article for the Barber Journal Our BCCS meeting held Saturday morning was attended by over a dozen persons Our meeting was covered by Coin World reporter A1 Doyle Editor Eileen Ribar and her husband and error collector Brian were lauded for their efforts in stopping altered coins from selling on eBay Recall one example involved someone buying a 1 9 1 5 D half dollar and selling a few months later a 1 9 1 5 half dollar w
