A strikingly beautiful example with vibrant mahogany brown surfaces and slight olive accents on the high points. Subtle reflectivity in the fields, though the effect of the bronzing powder is that the entirety of the surface has an extremely fine satin finish that is easily seen under low magnification. Central devices are sharp, glossy and lustrous. Stars 5 through 10 are softly defined, as typical of these Proofs, but curiously not typical of the variety in general. A single faint spot is seen just below star 12, and it is quite trivial in nature. Overall the eye appeal is excellent, and quite superior to the last one o

An e.xtremdy rare coin whose historic importance reaches far beyond the simple confines oflarge cent collecting or early Proof type. Deep ruddy mahogany with some lustrous traces of gold and mint color on lightly refiective surfaces, the reverse is a slightly deeper maroon shade than the lightly bronzed obverse. Both sides show subtle mottling created by unevenly coating the cent in bronzing powder, the depth of the reverse color perhaps caused by a heavier coat of powder or longer exposure to heat than the obverse. Clearly double struck, with each strike distinguishable under careful study and most plain around

Neither I nor the seller knew who this Dr. David Hosack was, but the wonderful bust right obverse with a huge die break and the fact that it was a bronzed proof medal made it an excellent acquistions for me to give sSuzanne as a gift. The reverse of the medal features the inscription “Arts and Science” along with the tools and symbols of the arts and sci- ences of the time; the caduceus of a doctor, the palette of a painter, the harp of a musician, and the square and divider of the surveyor to name a few. Below was inscribed “FURST.F”, short for the Latin “Furst Fecit” (Furst Made IT), the name of the medal’s engraver.
