he 2 cent postage due of 1894 Concerning the last we have no information except that it has been listed in the U S Specialized Catalogue for nearly 30 years The 1894 regular series proofs have also been listed since before I944 while the 1898 proofs have been recognized for at least 25 years A unique plate number block of six of the 2 Trans Mississippi cardboard plate proof was in the Col E. H. R. Green collection sold by Harmer Rooke Co in November 1944 Aside from this little is known about these elusive items They remain among those cardboard plate proofs which the author has never seen In his review of the proof section of the 1948 Scott U S Specialized Catalogue Brazer noted that only one sheet of 400 each of the 1 and 2 cent and one sheet of 200 each of the 6 cent 2 and 5

The Essay Proof Journal 183 Grilled Essays of the U S 1870 Issue By Karl Burroughs This article describes nineteen 1870 stamps with odd sized unflattened grills different from the grills on the issued stamps which puts them in the essay class All were in the collection of Col E. H. R. Green and prior to that they were in the collection of the Earl of Crawford The grilled stamps examined are the i 2 3 6 7 10 15 24 30 and 90 cents points down and the same denominations with grill points up except that no 24 cents points up has been seen The paper is thin and hard distinctly the type of paper used by the National Bank Note Co The thickness of the paper varies two essay

ished it Definite proof that Baldwin engraved the airplane vignette and Edward M Weeks the balance of the stamp is contained in two pages of Baldwin s diary record The 24 cents stamp has an added interest and attraction because of its colorful history in the discovery of one printed sheet of the stamps in a Washington Post Office with the airplane inverted and its subse quent purchase by Col E. H. R. Green and the fabulous sums of money since paid for certain position blocks of the stamp It is somewhat of a coincidence to find that Baldwin a few years previously date unknown had designed and engraved a book plate for Col Green
