    report of the com mittee from which these figures were taken was appended to the pamphlet and furnished an easy means for cor recting the errors This report was reproduced by Mr Phillips but his attention was not to all appearances directed towards the errors contained in the table In the eighth number of Rhode Island Historical Tracts Mr Sidney S Rider reprinted Potter s account of the Rhode Island Currency with some additions and changes When the table was reprinted in this tract the error caused by entering the emissions of 1740 and 1743 in terms of new tenor was corrected and the column of currency outstanding was thus freed from error but by some strange oversight the careless transfer of the in correct sterling value for the bills issued to supply the treasury was permitted to stand The re

    150 Counterfeiting in Colonial Pennsylvania being detected and in the chest of his cousin Robert Jenkins 971 forged twenty shilling bills were discovered a man turned over to the authorities by Tom Bell had 1 7 in bogus currency on his person in the pocketbook of John Bellamy were found four false pistoles a counterfeit New York five shilling bill and 80 in forged Rhode Island Currency Lummis and Bradford seized in New Jersey had about them 102 fifteen shilling bills 142 twelve shilling bills and 89 six shilling bills Heinrich Jaeger admitted that he had made 40 in counterfeit money Germantown coiners apparently put into cir culation a vast number of false doubloons and dollars Sigismund Hainly confessed that he had imported 20 in counterfeit paper Daniel Jeffron wh

    /1961 Numismatics Correspondence Catalogs Appraisals Colonial currency

    de Island based upon a 20 bill issued by Rhode Island on July 2 1780 We assume that the note is fully signed on both front and back numbered and issued although we cannot discern this from the photocopy Many were liberated from the archives of the State By a resolve of the Rhode Island Assembly in June 1788 outstanding bills of the July 2 1780 issue were required to be exchanged for the Rhode Island Currency issued pursuant to the Act passed at the May 1786 session This bill apparently was not exchanged and thus became demonetized Admittedly that was a unilateral rejection of liability but all states as well as the federal government took similar action as to their currency The State of Rhode Island was the principal obligor and the United States of America signed only as guarantor Thus Rhode
