Rose, who left the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing to become department manager at Waterlowthat it would be too dan- gerous not to hire Harrison. This implied that a com- peting company would certainly hire him. By 1900 Harrison chose to work as a free-lance engraver and executed some designs for Perkins, Bacon & Co. ,ALVES REIS: THE MAN WHO STOLE PORTUGAL

    07/19/2015

Highlight: Reis took the forged documents to William Waterlow, of the printing company Waterlow &Sons, and convinced the company to print the notes. Since Waterlow &Sons had the original plates of the notes they were being asked to print, the notes printed for Reis were literally indistinguishable from the authorize prints. When Waterlow realized that the serial numbers printed were already used in previous runs, they contacted the bank. Their contact, unfortunately, was Reis, who reassured them that it was okay.

Highlight: we showed two Waterlow die proofs of what were described in a Christie’s sale catalog as Maltese revenue stamps inscribed M.M.D.N.A. and picturing a nursing sister. Through the courtesy of L.N. Williams, we now have the com- plete story of these items, which are not really fiscals; The Malta Memorial District Nursing Association, which was the subject of the two designs illustrated on page 176, was founded on the initiative of Capt. Robert Ingham MBE LLD (Honoris Causa, Malta) on September 1, 1945 to serve as a living memorial to those who fought and suffered and gave their lives during the “Second Great Siege of Malta 1940-1943.” (The first siege was in 1565, when the Turks made an unsuccessful attempt to invade the island.) Strong color of the multi color under-prints and guilloche add nice contrast and the Ox-cart vignette on the back shows in a green hue in favor of the typical black inks. Highlight: Hyderabad Hand Painted 1000 Rupee Note seen printed on Waterlow & Sons thick cardstock. A significant feature of this proof is the Waterlow & Sons stamped seal embossed on the bottom right. This is another proof we feel is likely unique, as this was not the design that was ultimately chosen for the issued version of the note. Two Specimen Proofs highlight the French section of our catalog. These are prominent notes that we have never offered, and that you will be unlikely to see again in a public auction for quite some time. These rare “Moliere” 50,000 Francs and “Colbert” 500 Francs pieces (as they are known to French collectors), both exhibit exceptionally large margins, as they were created for size fitting purposes. Without serial numbers and watermarks, these also feature problem free

Highlight: This stunning piece is hand drawn and painted on thick Waterlow & Sons card stock. At the bottom right, on the matted card stock, a significantly embossed, circular and desirable Waterlow & Sons Specimen seal is stamped. This rarity is adorned by the 5 languages of Kannada, Marathi, Urdu, Telugu and English signifying the denomination. This initial design, is likely unique as it is not the same as the issued version, P-S267, which features the Hyderabad seals at the top corners of the note instead of on each side of the vignette of The Charminar under the Star and Crescent Moon at center. The most striking difference between this artists proposed design and the issued note, is the absence of The Charminar. This monument and mosque in Hyderabad, Teleganda was constructed on the bank of the
