    yoff was immense While in jail for embezzlement in 1925 he concocted a scheme that would later be known as the Portuguese Banknote Crisis He and a few associates forged a document in the name of the Central Bank of Portugal the institution responsible for creating the supply of Portuguese currency which authorized the printing of a run of banknotes Reis took the forged documents to William Waterlow of the printing company Waterlow amp Sons and convinced the company to print the notes Since Waterlow amp Sons had the original plates of the notes they were being asked to print the notes printed for Reis were literally indistinguishable from the authorize prints When Waterlow realized that the serial numbers printed were already used in previous runs they contacted the bank Their conta

    of England s most respected engravers and designers He was born on August 5 1872 and died in January 1955 There were six engravers with the name Harrison all came to America to work except Samuel The father of J A C Harrison was also named Samuel the son of John Harrison At 13 J A C Harrison began his studies with his father and attended art classes in Birmingham At 17 or 18 he joined Waterlow Brothers and Leighton later called Waterlow Sons George U Rose who left the U S Bureau of Engraving and Printing to become department manager at Waterlow Sons recognized Harrison s superior talent Rose said that it would be too dan gerous not to hire Harrison This implied that a com peting company would certainly hire him By 1900 Harrison chose to work as a free lance engraver and
