    a set of as many late die states of the cents of 1801 1802 1803 as I could find using Howard Newcomb s 1925 work The United States Cents of the Years 1801 1802 1803 as my basic guide but supplementing it with later discoveries such as the S 259 with a rim cud in a similar position to that on this S 238 of which John Wright kindly furnished me a foil pressing At EAC in Orlando in May 1990 dick punchard told me he had seen an S 238 such as we illustrate here I duly noted this at the bottom of page 290 in my heavily annotated copy of Penny Whimsy and kept my eyes open for such a coin but I never found one Dick did not tell me the circumstances under which he saw a coin such as this but since both Dick Punchard and Bill Woytasek are Minnesotans and Bill discovered this one at a local show

    for a job very well done The Secret Whist Match The whist match wasn t intended to be a deep dark secret but it did turn out that way For that blunder I will cheerfully take the heat A whist match on the varieties of 1 832 through 1835 head of 34 had been planned for several months but for some dumb reason I never let anyone know about it other than the players Anyway John Wright and dick punchard got Ed Jasper and me out of bed at midnight on Saturday night for the aforementioned match The match itself was close with John Wright emerging as the winner It took a little longer than might be expected simply because John is three or four deep in most varieties so it took a while for him to select a coin to play And talk about die states A second match was played on the 1835 s heads o

    I had known John s 1839 coins from before via pressings but it was a real treat to see the actual coins John Wright went through my 1839 s for me and discovered that my 1839 6 N 1 die state I was really an early die state II Terrific That means that I ve got the two hardest to find die states of the 1839 6 N 1 Now for a super die state I to match the other two What a trio it would make dick punchard gave me two additional pointers for spotting the 1839 N 1 5 and I have added the information to my notes Dick was lucky enough to cherry a 39 N 1 5 at a recent show Our official meeting started with the traditional self introductions Those members and guests present were Dave McLain Wes Rasmussen Bill Weimer Dick Punchard Clifford Mishler Joseph Tomasko Jr Don Valenziano Jr Mark E Kle
