    Highlight: to the Y-117 10 Forint, as they might be required for making change and no shortage of coins was encountered. In pocket change we found Y-72a 10 Filler, Y-73a 20 Filler, Y-97 50 Filler all AU dated 1978, and Y-80a 1 Forint in AU dated 1979! A Y-115 2 Forint in brass was found dated 1978 in about XF, and a Y-116 5 Forint and Y-117 10 Forint in nickel were dated 1971, the most recent dates noted for these coins. Bank notes in circulation were P-165 100 Forint, P-166 10 Forint, P-167 20 Forint, P-168 50 Forint, and P-169 500 Forint. Most common dates noted were 1969 and 1975, the latter with different signatures. It appears the 1975 is the last series to be issued as several times crisp uncirculated notes with consecutive serial numbers were received in ex- change. This series, and the 1969

    Highlight: the Forint, imposed a heavy burden on the newly organized Mint since it was essential to turn out large quantities of the Forint coinage to replace the discontinued Pengo coins. Under the terms of the monetary law of 1946 the following coins were au- thorized Denomination Date Pieces struck 1 Forint 1946 40,000,000 20 Filler 1946 29,480,000 10 1946 40,770,000 2 1946 31,980,000 New dies were cut for the % Forint piece with a portrait of Kossuth, the patriot, on the obverse. The 1946 piece has a lettered edge but the lettering was dropped from the thinner and lighter 1947 coin. The 2 Forint and 1 Forint aluminum coins have a large numeral of value on the obverse and the arms of the nation on the reverse.     Highlight: The new 5 forint coin is identical to the old one except that it is 23mm in dia- meter and is composed of cupro-nickel. The older piece was composed of nickel and was 24mm in diameter. The new 10 forint coin is composed of aluminum-bronze and is 25mm in diameter, otherwise it is identical to the old 28mm, nickel piece first issued in 1971. The 20 forint coins is a new denomination for a currency coin in Hungary. It is composed of cupro-nickel and has a diameter of 26mm. The obverse bears the image of Dozsa while the reverse bears the same devices at the 5 forint coin. The edge is reeded. The 20 forint coin replaces the 20 forint the head of Dozsa. The other coins of 1984 are of the same types as before. A forint is currently equal to about 2 cents U.S. funds. 93

The edges of both coins were minted with rosette and other flower motives in rotation. 30,000 pieces, including 6,000 sets in proof condition, were struck of each denomination. Obverse: Within a pearl-circle is the legend MAGYAR NEPKOZTARSASAG (Hungarian People's Republic), BP (Budapest) mintmark and the value of 5° FORINT as well as the date of year 1972.
