It had a value of one and one half Kreuzer, and was largely coined during the eighteenth century for Hungary and Transylvania. Poluschka. A former Russian coin, the quarter of the Denga {q.v.). Originally it was struck in silver, hut the later issues are of copper. The Polusehki first ap- peared under Peter the Great from about the year 1700, and continued in use during the eighteenth century. Catherine II struck varieties for speeial use in Siberia. The name is traceable to the early Rus- sian eustom of using skins as money, and is derived from potu, the half of any artiele, and schkura, a skin. Coins of the Malcontents. — Contemporaneous with the War of the Spanish Succession, though not really a part of it, was the uprising of the Hungarian subjects of Leopold I. commonly called the Malcontents, under the leadership of Francis Rakoczy II, a member of a distinguished Transylvania family which had played an important part in the affairs of Hungary for many years. Francis Rakoczy II was born in 1676. Toward the close of the century he was imprisoned on an accusation of conspiracy to incite rebellion, but he escaped to Poland and headed the insurrection against Leopold at the time the latter was engaged in the war against France.     Highlight: silver half Thalers and Poltura pieces in bronze (Fig. 14). On silver and gold pieces the Royal bust was replaced by the Hungarian Arms, and the Royal name and style was replaced by the inscription MON NCV AIR (or ARG) REG HUNG on the obverse. The reverse maintained the Madonna, described as PATRCI1A HUNGARIAE. The bronze pieces took as types a crowned shield with no inscrip- tion and the value in Roman figures sometimes surmounted by a Madonna and the inscription FRO LIBERT ATE.
