    Curto s Book II in 1978 CAIO and PX 52 5 were reported in Cunningham s Military Tokens of the United States Volume I in 1995 Kappen 7 and 9 were reported in Kappen s California Tokens Supplement in 1997 The military tokens we know to have been used at Alcatraz would have been used in the broadest sense in the period of the late 1880s to about 1930 when Alca traz was a military prison The post trader concept was wide spread in the United States up until about 1888 when the businesses were shut down by the U S govern ment The post trader was a merchant having the exclu sive privilege to trade upon the military reserve to which he was appointed There is no evidence that any post trader operated at Alcatraz and issued tokens Army canteens by decree replaced the post trader in about 188

    As early as the spring of 1869 Ft Supply in Indian Territory had a self appointed merchant and later John F Tappan officially served as sutler for a few months Col A D Nelson recommended the appointment of a single person to barter with the military and Indians and the secretary of war responded on Nov 17 1870 by appointing Albert E Reynolds official post trader William M D Lee a native of Wisconsin came early to Independence Missouri where he hired out to freighter Lines for a time hauling supplies to various military posts He went into business for himself obtaining govern ment contracts to supply several frontier posts and Indian reservations He needed money to expand and in time formed a partnership with Albert E Re 5 molds a successful
