Massachusetts June 18, 1776 $4 or 24 Shillings Fr. MA-209. PCGS Very Fine 35. The June 18, 1776 Dollar denomination notes or "Small Sword in Hand" notes were printed by Benjamin Edes on coarse paper. They have the vertical format like the Revere "Swords," but with the Patriot emblem smaller and on the face. The notes were denominated in dollars and shillings. Benjamin Edes (1732-1803) was a member of the Sons of Liberty and publisher of the Boston Gazette, along with his partner John Gill. His ability to evade capture while transporting the Gazette's printing press and type to Watertown, Massachusetts was important to keep his patriotic press running. John Gill left the partnership when his political opinions began to diverge from those of Edes. He died in obscurity and poverty despite his influence in the Revolution. This genuine bill is a very pleasing example and perfect for a type set. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
