Description North Carolina December 29, 1785 40 Shillings Contemporary Counterfeit Fr. NC-215. PCGS Very Fine 25. A fascinating Contemporary Counterfeit. Though well made for the period, unequivocally from a false plate. Blue counterfeit detector notes were made of the type (one was in the Boyd collection of this denomination,) and inspection of the left vignette shows the telltale sign of a counterfeit: the sword arm does not bend at the elbow. A problem-free and sharp looking example of another rare type from the Newman collection. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Realized $705.00. Newman VII (Heritage Auctions, 10/2015), lot 18165. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
