Description

1843 Second Restrike Proof Breen 1-C R7. PCGS graded Proof 65+ Brown. CAC. Reverse of 1840. Light bluish steel brown and golden tan. The fields are nicely reflective with moderate to deep mirrors on both sides, a few faint hairlines from choice. The only notable mark is a spot of darker toning mixed with fine crud on the left side of star 5. Plated on page 403 in the Breen encyclopedia to illustrate the variety and also in his color photos at the back of the book. Weight 97.5 grains, which places this piece in Breen's series V (although he mistakenly lists it as a Series VI example in his condition census). A knife rim shows on more than half of both sides. Our grade is Proof-62. The attribution and Missouri Cabinet provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only example graded at PCGS.
